A good place to start celebrating Christmas in Portland is Victoria Mansion on Danforth Street. The massive brownstone mansion with its square tower and Italianate rooflines is just steps away from the waterfront. The mansion’s extraordinarily intact interiors, lavishly decorated with fresco paintings by Guiseppe Guidicini, stained glass, and many of the original ornate Herter Brothers furnishings, represent the only surviving commission of New York designer Gustave Herter. The 1858-1860 house retains many original carpets, fabrics, and appointments including ninety percent of the original furnishings. The National Historic Landmark was the most modern building of its day complete with indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, gas lighting, central heating, and a bell system to summon servants.
Christmas at Victoria Mansion is celebrated every year by inviting interior and floral designers along with other professionals to decorate the public rooms of the house. The Holidays here are time honored treats as the volunteers use their time and talent to transform the mansion from a summer palace by the sea to a Christmas wonderland. The result is over the top with lavish displays from dining room to main hall and from sitting room to bedroom. Elaborate floral centerpieces are incorporated with the period furniture. Swags and arrangements of fruit and flowers encrust mantelpieces, adorn the stairway balusters, newel posts, and railings, and drip from the already ornate chandeliers. No expense is spared in preparing the mansion for thousands of holiday visitors.
